Moving to a new city can be both exciting and overwhelming. If you’re planning to rent an apartment in Austin, Texas, follow this comprehensive checklist to ensure a smooth transition.
1. Research Your New Neighborhood
Before packing a single box, research Austin’s neighborhoods. Consider factors like safety, proximity to work, schools, and amenities. Popular areas include Downtown, South Congress, and East Austin. Search Travis and Williamson County's .gov websites for the most up to date stats.
2. Create a Timeline
Start planning early. Set a moving date, book a moving company or rental truck, and notify utility providers. Aim to complete most tasks at least two weeks before moving day. Austin apartments are on a 60 day notice, meaning you will find availability for you're move date starting 2 months before you need to be in your new home. Don't procrastinate until the last minute because rent will usually be higher for ASAP move-ins.
3. Packing Tips
Declutter: Sort through your belongings and donate or sell items you no longer need. Only move the stuff you need!
Label Boxes: Clearly label boxes with their contents and the room they belong to. This will also help the movers when delivering your items.
Pack Essentials Separately: Keep essentials like toiletries, a change of clothes, and important documents in a separate box.
4. Utilities Setup
Ask the leasing agent to provide you with their property's fee sheet. This will list all of the utility providers that service the area.
Electricity, Water, Trash and Recycling: Contact local utility companies to set up electricity and water services at your new address. Most can be done online.
Internet and Cable: Schedule installation for internet and cable services.
5. Local Services
Change Your Address: Update your address with the post office, banks, phone carrier, and other relevant institutions.
Healthcare Providers: Research local doctors, dentists, and pharmacies.
Public Transportation: Familiarize yourself with Austin’s public transportation options. Austin Metro and the Metro Rail are great, low-cost methods of transportation.
6. Explore Austin
Once you’ve settled in, explore the city! Visit Barton Springs, enjoy live music on Sixth Street, and indulge in some Tex-Mex cuisine. Remember, moving is a process, and it’s okay to ask for help. Follow this checklist, stay organized, and embrace the adventure of starting anew in Austin!
